The second annual conference on Hydro Power in India-progress and hindrances was recently held in the New Delhi. Organised by the Power Line, a magazine related to information on power, the conference discussed some crucial issues pertaining to the hydropower sector including the status of the small hydro sector.
The government has short listed 50,000 MW worth of projects, which will be developed over the next 10 to 12 years, from a list of projects identified by CEA amounting to over 100,000 MW. A special session was to focus on the plans and strategies to realise the hydro potential in Northeast region and emphasised on the need for development of mega projects with capacity of over 10,000 MW.
