The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is yet to get property tax worth Rs 1520 crore. Putting a great strain on the municipals corporations finances is the biggest defaulter, the state government, which is yet to pay the Rs 589 crore it owes the BMC in property tax. Various State Government properties like ministerial houses, government offices, police quarters and state employees quarters have not paid property tax for years.
Property tax is a major revenue earner for the BMC, contributing approximately Rs 1500 crore annually to the civic exchequer. Most of the amounts are pending from 1990 onwards. The total amount has only been increasing over the years- the outstanding was pegged at Rs 747.92 crores in 2000 and now the amount has jumped to Rs 1520 crores. |
