MTNL ponders over a bigger and better expansion
MTNL will invest Rs 1,312 crore to expand and upgrade its networking targeting about 5.5 lakh new wireless connections in Delhi. MTNL Executive Director said that their target is four lakh GSM and 1.5 lakh CDMA connections in the year for which Rs 610 crore will be invested in Delhi. Currently, it has 5.47 lakh GSM- based cellular users (Dolphin) service while the WLL (M) CDMA- based service has 1.17 lakh customers.

MTNL will float a tender for third generation mobile services with capacity of 20 lakh subscribers next year. On the CDMA side, it plans to increase the number from 76 to 222 stations. On the broadband, the PSU is targeting to increase this year to 2.5 lakh from 38,150 connections at present. MTNLs other plans include offering corporate networking MPLS-VPN services to corporates, setting up a 300-seater unified call centre, laying next generation networks of 24,000 lines and 12,000 km fibre deployment. Other measures involve setting up poll less network under which 50,000 connections are targeted in this fiscal. It will also replace its current IN system to improved version to enable televoting
