TEA PRODUCTION TO ESCALATE
Tea production in the south rose 5.4% to touch 112.6m kg during Jan-July 05 against 106.8mKg recorded in the same period the previous year. The United Planters Association of Sourthen India (Upasi) said in a statement in Coonoor on Wednesday that"If the current trend in production is maintained, it would mean the end of four successive years of low crop in South". Exports declined 12.6% in quantity terms and 9.1% in value terms. Exports from the south stood at 50.5m kg, down by 7.3m kg while it was lower by 4.1mkg in the north it was added.
