Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre and the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Manipal Hospital, Banglore have joined hands to introduce an innovative technique called Radioisotope Occult Lesion Localisation (ROLL) that will benefit people with suspicious breast lumps and early stage breast cancers. Almost 25% of cancerous breast tumours cannot be physically felt on clinical examination. The techniques like Mammography or ultra-sonography, localisation of tumour for successful surgical treatment have some complications like where the wire gets fractured, inaccurate localisation leads to false negative biopsies and sometimes, needle placement is very uncomfortable with poor compliance from the patients. ROLL was successfully used by doctors at Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centrefor the first time in India. ROLL is easier to perform both radiological and surgical. The Department of Nuclear Medicine has invested in a special Gamma Probe to help surgeons identify the hot spot easily in three dimensions giving greater flexibility in planning the incision. It is less painful compared to wire-localisation and can be performed as a day-care procedure. Surgical Oncologist and Consultant Dr. Somashekhar said "A specimen of the tumors assessed with the hot spot and whether it is cancerous. Non-randomised data from our series of many patients suggests that ROLL is superior to wire localisation."
