Government plans to establish new food and drug labs
40 more food and drug testing laboratories is planned to be set up by government and also improve the existing ones at a cost of over Rs 350 crore. These labs will be as hi-tech as any other testing lab in a developed European country and will be able toconduct tests for any matter that could harm the consumer. Though India now has stringent food and drug control laws in place, the number of labs, which can detect violation ,are very few. Out of the 19 drug testing labs only seven are well equipped to test all varieties of drugs. The labs are being set up under a programme called Capacity Building Project on Food and Quality Control of Drugs.
