L&TS defence -related orders are likely to go beyond Rs 600 crore, if the Pinaka rocket launcher project for the armed forces gets government approval for manufacturing, said the companys Senior V-PMV Kotwal . Kotwal said L&T would manufacture the system if it gets the go-ahead. He added "We hope that the project reaches the commercial evaluation and the final price negotiation stage within a few months." He said, " We have done the entire designing in-house,as well as the prototyping. Our prototype have undergone field trials, said Kotwal ,who is a member of the Kelkar committee set up by the government ,which recently submitted its first report to the defence ministry, to encourage self -reliance in defence production through private sector. The present expenditure on capital equipment for the armed forces is about Rs 34,000 crore. He said "Around 35% of such procurement is done from within the country. Most of the defence procurement is done from other countries. If our Pinaka project reaches manufacturing stage ,it would demonstrate that Indian private sector can manufacture defence equipments." Recently L&T implemented the WM-18multi-barrel roclet launcher (MBRL),a beach clearing system,as well as torpedo tube launching system, both of which were accepted by the navy. Kotwal said " We have already developed inhouse capabilities in systems engineering and integration. In fact, the Pinaka system also incorporates electronic systems."
