A recent study by an Indian has revealed that anxiety significantly increases the risk of onset of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts by individuals. The study has said that suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are strong risk factors for completed suicides. Jitender Sareen, form the University of Manitoba , Winnipeg, who conducted the study along with collegues ,said that mood disorders such as depression, substance abuse disorders and schizophrenia are well established risk factors for suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. The findings revealed that the essence of anxiety disorder more than doubled the risk of suicidal behaviour. Clinicians and policymakers need to be aware of these, and further research is needed to delineate whether treatment of anxiety disorders reduces the risk of subsequent suicidal behaviour. |
