Liquor major Radico Khaitan is building a war chest to acquire brands in the domestic and overseas market. According to sources, the Rs 995-crore company is keen to buy, out-license or lease out brands form Vijaya Mallaya- promoted UB Group as part of its brands under its fold. Radicos spokesperson confirmed that the company has appointed Rabo India as advisors for the acquisition ,and that it was open for UB Group brands as well,if its advisors so suggested. Post Shaw Wallace acquisition ,Mallya had said the group would rationalise its brand portfolio to focus on the high-growth and high-margin brands. Brand acquisition is not new to Radico Khaitan ,having acquired brands and bought out its foreign partners in the past. It has bought the brands of Brihan Maharashtra, including Brihans Napolean Brandy, Brihans Premieums Whisky, and Tropican White Rum. Radico Khaitans focus is on the white spirits division, and it is aiming acquisition in this space. In the domestic market, there are number of companies like Mohan Meakins, who own one-or-two strong national or regional brands. These could be potential acquisition targets, Mohan Meakins sells Old Monk rum, which sources say Mallya is also interested to buy.
