Mecon Ltd has developed a new process technology for the production of nickel-chromium bearing alloyed pig iron using waste chromite overburden materials. MK Deshmukh, director (engineering), Mecon said, that the company has been able ot commercially establish the technology of exploitation of chromium and nickel from chromite overburdened as alloyed pig iron. During mining of chromite ore, the overburden containing around 7% to 8% chromium and 0.8 to 1% nickel is dumped as waste. In a bid to convert this waste into wealth ,Mecon Ltd has been making sustained efforts to utilise chromium and nickel in the chromite overburden ,Deshmukh said addressing a workshop on Use of alloyed pig iron in mini steel plants and foundries, organised by Mecon in association with the deapartment of Mines and department of Science and Technology.
