India can reduce its imports of edible oils if it takes a drive to promote palm oil cultivation in the country, said Mohamed Abd Majed,deputy CEO of Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council.Since the yield of the oil from a palm fruit is three times higher than that of other oilseeds, which are traditionally grown in India,palm cultivation on an extensive scale will help the country increase its overall domestic edible oil production and thus reduce its imports,Mr Majed said.TO facilitate this,the country needs to amend the existing laws on land ownership,removing the ceiling on the land holding of an individual farmer.This is required given the nature of palm plantation which can be viable only if it is taken up on a minimum of 10,000 hectares of land at a stretch, he pointed out.Mr Majed said if Indian government offers an enabling environment on land ownership,it may attract some more investment from Malaysia to raise palm plantation here.
