Theres a bit of good news for heart patients.Clot busting pill Sorbitrate may become cheaper soon.The government is looking at imposing price control on the drug.The move could,however affect the bottomline Nicholas Piramal India,the maker of Sorbitrate.The drug,which instantly relieves heart ache by relaxing blood vessels and increasing supply of blood and oxygen to the heart,had shown abnormal rise in prices in the last year although its volume growth was marginal.Drug price watch dog the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority(NPPA) has sought the chemical ministrys permission to fix the price of this medicine by invoking a provision in the Drug Price Control Order which has been used only once earlier in its eight-year history.The pricing body is concerned by the market data it has received on Sorbitrate(chemical name Isosorbide Dinitrate) price movement.The drug price has increased by 28.9% while its volume grew by 28.9% while its volume grew by only 0.7%between August 04 and July 05.The drug is a market leader with more than 50% of share of the Rs 30 crore anti-agina drug market.Nicholas Piramal earns about Rs 16.8 crore from the sale of this drug.It is not a costly drug,although the rise in price is statistically significant.Now 100 tablets of 5mg costs Rs 38.9.Close competitor Wyeth sells a similar drug,Isordil,at |
