AIDS drugs to be freed from customs and excise levies
The chemical ministry is finalising a list of cancer and HIV/AJDS medicines to be recommended to the finance ministry fro removing customs and excise levies at a meeting scheduled for January 19.The list of medicines submitted by institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the National Aids Control Organisations to the chemicals ministry include products from Cipla,
GlaxoSmithKline ,Emcure,Citadel Aurobindo,Pfizer,Dr.Reddys and Fulford India among others.Sources said 12 first generation AIDS drugs which figure in the national lost of essential medicines(NLEM) and another 10 new generation ones will be recommended for all duty cuts.At present, medicines attract a 16% excise duty and a 15% peak customs duty, which vary from product to product.The ministry will recommend all the 30 cancer drugs figurins in the NLEM and anothr 10-15 new age cancer drugs for duty relief.Some of the cancer drug brands expected to be recommended are Pharmacias Adriamycin ,Dr Reddys Dcacotin injection,German Remedies Impa Vido and Sun Pharmas Letroz.These are mass-use brands as indicated by the annual trading data of market research agency ORG-IMS.
