Ranbaxy to change R&D scheme
Ranbaxy is planning a change in tack in its R&D strategy. The company is deciding to get more aggressive on the alliance route for new drug development programmes, while the in-house focus will be more on developing new generic products.Malvinder Singh, the newly-appointed MD & CEO of Ranbaxy ,told "We plan to go for more alliances for expanding our new development programmes and are also talking to a few multinational companies for this."He, however, refused to name the companies Ranbaxy in talks with. The company currently has an alliance with Glaxo SmithKline for new drug development. The new strategy is to strike 2-3 more such alliances, which will be more cost-effective and less risky.Mr Singh said "The alliance with GSK is progressing well and most probably we will hit a milestone this year.

We now want to grow our R&D programmes more through the collaboration route."He said the company also plans to enter new therapeutic areas like oncology and injectibles and is in talks for launching new products in these segments through the in-licensing route. He also said the company is actively scouting for acquisition opportunities, both in the global domestic market, but is not in a hurry to conclude a deal till they get one with the "right price and strategic fit".He said "Our target is to improve our bottomline by increasing cost effeciency and operational margins rather than being in the size game.We will be among the top-five generics players in the world."He said he would continue to pursue the growth strategy framed by the company earlier.
