Agriculture ministry asks Fertilizer ministry to avail farmers of adequate fertilizer supplies
Concerned over complaints in some quarters that the wheat growing states are facing problem of fertiliser availability, agricultural ministry has asked the fertilizer ministry to review the situation.Coming as it does on top of the increasing wheat prices and lower-than-normal buffer stocks, the government does not want to take any chance and has instructed the fertiliser ministry to ensure enough availability of manure in the wheat growing states.Ensuring continuous fertiliser supply in the growing areas is critical at this juncture as the wheat crop is maturing and grain filling has started, a wheat expert said. " There have been reports regarding inadequate supply of fertiliser including the urea in the wheat growing states and we have asked the fertiliser ministry to look into it as we do not want to take any chance," a senior agricultural ministry official said.

Total coverage of wheat so far is estimated at 261.5 lakh hectare on January 23 as against 259.9 lakh hectare during the same period last year.Higher coverage has been reported in UP,Maharashtra ,Rajasthan and West Bengal. However, lower acreage has been reported in MP owing to no rains and non-availability of water. As far as rice is concerned ,transplanting of Rabi rice has started in Andhra Pradesh,Assam and Tamil Nadu.Total price coverage so far has been reported 14.3 lakh hectares as against 13.9 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
