The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of Steel Authority of India, has developed asymmetric thick-web rails for Indian Railways. Thick-web asymmetric rails are used in switches of high speed and heavy haulage tracks to cater the needs of the freight corridor.

Indian Railways was importing thick web asymmetric profile, which is produced by a few rail manufacturers in the world. But now it will be able to speed up its modernisation process with indigenous asymmetric thick-web rails

The Bhilai plant, 30 km from here, made history during the just ended fiscal 2005-06 with production of 5.178 million tonnes of hot metal, 5.05 million tones crude steel and 4.29 million tonnes saleable steel. For the first time since its inception in 1959, the plant has crossed five million tonnes mark for hot metal as well as crude steel.
