The Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universitys (TNAU) domestic and export market intelligence cell (DEMIC) has chosen cotton, maize and gingelly as favoured crops for sowing this kharif season based on its price forecasting.

In its `crop tips to the farmers, the DEMIC has suggested sowing of LRA-5166 variety cotton, considering the favourable export opportunities, rise in domestic consumption by mills and good yield prospects.

It has forecasted per quintal price for average quality of LRA-5166 in the Rs 1,900-2,100 band during December 2006-January 2007. The forecast is based on the current price of Rs 2,000 per quintal (July 2006) and last years price (during harvest in December 2005-January 2006) of Rs 1,950 a quintal.

It has forecasted that the maize price will hover in the Rs 575-600 band per quintal during November-December this year when the crop sown now will be harvested. This is based on the current price trend of Rs 650 per quintal. Last year, the maize harvested in November-December 2005 was being quoted at Rs 550-580. In the case of gingelly, the DEMIC has forecasted a price of Rs 23/25 per kg during September-November 2006 as its price remained at this level during last November. Currently, it is being quoted at Rs 21 per kg.
