The probiotic drink, Yakult has been launched by the Yakult Danone India (YDI) on Wednesday. The YDI is actually a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) between the Japanese major probiotics producing company, Yakult Honsha and the French dairy major Group Danone and the JV started its journey in the year of 2005. The Yakult is the first ever probiotic drink of the company.
The officials of the company have informed that in order to facilitate the production of the drink, the Yakult Danone India has already established a manufacturing facility at Rai Food Park in Haryana. The facility is having a capacity of producing 1 million bottles per day. The officials have also stated that the company is aiming to sell 1 lakh bottles a day for the financial year of 2008-09 and it has spent an amount of Rs 136 crore in the initial period of the probiotic business.
Commenting about the companys plans regarding the probiotic business, the Managing Director of the YDI, Mr. Kiyoshi Oike said, "Though the market for probiotics in India is still at a nascent stage, health consciousness among Indian consumers is growing at a fast pace. As pioneers and the global leaders in this category, we will play a major role in developing the probiotics food market in India. We are confident Yakult will be accepted well by Indian consumers as an intrinsic part of their daily diet". He also informed that initially, the product will be available in the markets of Delhi and NCR and the company will launch it in the other metros and tier 2 cities in the north, later.
