A new company has entered the water treatment business and the company is the Voltas. The company has already initiated a project at Salt Lake City in Kolkata, West Bengal and the project is actually a private-public partnership. The two partners of the partnership are the special purpose vehicle formed by Voltas and Jisco, a Tata Steel subsidiary and the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority.
One of the top officials of the Voltas was talking about the companys undertaking a project in Kolkata and said, "It is a pilot project and depending on its success, we will talk to other municipal corporations to roll out the business in a bigger way". The official also said that the project is having a total value of 10 crore and it will provide treated water to the industrial township located in sector V of Salt Lake. There are a number of offices of the big industrial and multi-national companies like TCS and Cognizant. The Chairman of the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority, Mr. S A Ahmed added that there was no water treatment facility in that area before this project was undertaken.
Talking about the previous projects of Voltas, a source from the company stated that the company did initiate another Rs 300 crore sewage treatment project in Singapore. The top official of Voltas said that the company has formed the new SPV on the understanding with Jisco and Jisco has the experience in the water treatment business. The official further said that Jisco will be handling the public affairs and Voltas will be in charge of the engineering aspects.
