The equal Joint Venture (JV) company between the Japanese firm Yakult Honsha and French dairy major Danone, named the Yakult Danone India (YDI) has recently launched the first probiotics factory in India. The officials of the company have informed that the company has established the factory with an investment of Rs 136 crore and the unit is located at Rai Food Park. The officials also informed that the company would exclusively manufacture the companys probiotic milk drink named Yakult in this factory.
When contacted and enquired about the plant further, the Vice-Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Danone, Mr. Jacques Vincent has stated that the plant is having a total capacity of one million bottles per day. He was addressing the guests on the launching occasion and he also said that the company is also looking to enhance the capacity utilization of the plant in a phased manner. The sources from the company are informing that the probiotics are some dietary supplements that contain potentially beneficial bacteria or yeast and the lactic acid bacteria is the most common microbes used in manufacturing the probiotics.
While commenting on the issue, the Senior Managing Director and Head International Business Division of Yakult Honsha, Mr. N. Tsuritani said that the company would sale the product in Delhi and the National Capital Region in the initial period. He added, "We will gradually roll it out in other major metros and cities". Mr. Tsuritani also said that the company is also planning to invest an additional amount of Rs 100 crore over the next 3-4 years in order to strengthen the companys presence in the Indian market. He further said that the market for probiotic food is still at a nascent stage, though the market has already got maturity in the international scenario.
