The New Delhi-based International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the US-based Emory Vaccine Center (EVC) have recently joined hands together in order to develop some vaccines. The company officials have informed that the vaccines would be developed for the infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis and dengue and the center would be named as the Joint ICGEB-Emory Vaccine Centre.
The Director of ICGEB, Mr. V S Chauhan said, the center would be working towards controlling the infectious diseases through collaborative research on and also through the development of safe and effective vaccines for global use. The Union Minister of Science and Technology of India, Mr. Kapil Sibal has inaugurated the Joint ICGEB-EV Centre and while addressing the guests present there on the occasion, he said the such collaborations in research was necessary for making the best that science can offer, available at the lowest possible prices.
The sources from the industry have informed that the ICGEB is a specialist in the research on vaccines for control of the diseases like HIV, hepatitis B and E, SARS, dengue, tuberculosis and malaria that are quite common in the subcontinent. The sources also informed that the other half of the new partnership, the EVC is operating a number of 26 laboratories where its 39 faculty researchers and about 200 post-graduate students are working to develop vaccines for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, malaria, influenza and other global infectious and also for the chronic disease threats.
