A cement company from the Aditya Birla Group named the Ultratech Cement has recently announced that it has taken the decision to try for acquiring the Kankesanthurai cement plant in Jaffna in Sri Lanka. The officials of the company have stated that the plant is having a capacity of five lakh tonnes and the plant authority has shut down the plant for a long 17 years now. The Kankesanthurai plant is one of the first plants to be built in the island country and it is located near rich limestone deposits in the Jaffna peninsula.
A top official from the company said in this regard, "The Aditya Birla group will put forward a proposal to acquire the plant and efforts are on in this direction. But no decision has been taken by the Sri Lankan government". The official also said that the company was planning to send a delegation from the company to meet the government officials and the plant representatives in the troubled northern Sri Lanka region. The delegation would chalk out the details over the management of the plant. The sources informed that some other companies like Holcim and Tokyo Cement were also interested in acquiring the plant, though they have not came forward yet. The sources further added that the Ultratech Cement is thinking that shipping cement to Tamil Nadu from Jaffna would be much cheaper than shipping it from its plants situated elsewhere in India.
