The first flight of the world using the bio-fuel has been operated by the Virgin Atlantic on Sunday. The company has operated the flight named the Boeing 747-400 from London Heathrow to Amsterdam and no passengers were on board of the demonstration flight.
The President of Virgin Atlantic, Sir Richard Branson was expressing his views over the first flight on bio-fuel and said that they made no modifications to either the aircraft or the engines for operating the flight. He also said that the usage of such fuel for the commercial flights will still take another few years. Sir Richard said that they will share the results of the flight with the other airlines who are trying to cut the carbon emissions in the rest of the industry.
A source related to the operation of the first flight on bio-fuel said that the companies like Boeing GE Aviation and Imperium renewables partnered the Virgin Atlantic for the test flight. The source added that a total of22,000 kg of fuel was used for the demonstration flight and 5,500 kg of that fuel was bio fuel blend. The engineers made the bio-fuel from a blend of coconut oil from the Philippines and the babassu oil from Brazil.
