Railway Budget For 2008-09 Announced
The Railway Budget for the year of 2008-09, has been announced by the Union Railway Minister of India, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday. The minister has announced a number of new packages to facilitate the passengers further and he has also taken some steps to ensure the ongoing growth in the Railways income in the upcoming financial year.

While giving an account of the revenues that the Indian Railways has earned in the previous fiscal, Mr. Yadav said that the Railways has earned a huge revenue of Rs. 25,000 crore in 2007-08. The Railway Plan size has also increased to Rs 30,000 crore from Rs 11,000 crore in the last four years. Apart from that, Mr. Yadav has cut down the freight on petrol and diesel by 5% for facilitating the traders further. He has also announced a number of other packages for the passengers and also for the traders that include the followings:

oLengthening of 560 railway station platforms for taking long trains.
oUpgrading the middle-level and low-level platforms to high-level platforms in several stations for helping commuters.
oPrioritizing the doubling of lines.
oInvolving the professional agencies on a pilot basis for ensuring cleanliness in the running trains.
oStarting working on the automatic signalling in new sections.
oIntroducing smart card-based ticketing system.
oElectrifying more routes in North India.
oBuilding foot over bridge in the stations with the high level platforms.
oContinuing discussion with the foreign cos for the new wagon designs.
oSetting up high level platforms in a number of 135 stations.
oOutsourcing the housekeeping work in Shatabdi express.
oSetting up lifts and escalators in 50 stations.
oModernizing the coaches of Rajdhani and Shatabdi express.
oIntroducing touch screens, colour TVs across all the major stations.
oBuilding 6,000 automatic ticket sale machines within the next 2 years.
oMaking all the train coaches in stainless steel by 2010.
oUsing call centres for reservations.
oRenewing 16,548 old rail tracks.
oIntroducing ticket confirmation via mobiles service.
oAllowing private companies to make terminals on Railway land.
oMaking all un-manned crossings, manned.
oSelling Go Mumbai tickets at the bus depots.
oClearing the Delhi-JNPT-NavaSheva western freight corridor.
oIntroducing multi-level parking at 30 major stations.
oMaking the New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune as world-class stations.
oAnnouncing Amravati-Mumbai Express to run twice a week.
oAnnouncing Khajuraho-Delhi to run thrice a week.
oAnnouncing Chennai-Salem to have a daily frequency.
oMaking the Kurla-Howrah express to run twice a week.
oMaking BBU-NDLS Rajdhani to run thrice a week.
oConsidering a rail link for the Ennore port.
oAdopting a new wagon leasing policy.
oAnnouncing a special train between Delhi and Pune for the Commonwealth Games.
