The power crisis in Maharashtra could be mitigated a little if the cogeneration plants in the sugar co operatives could take off. Cooperative sugar factories have the potential to generate 1, 200 MW of power.
"The current power supply to the MSEDCL from sugar factories is only around 100 MW. There is a need to promote the cogeneration projects, as it will also open another source of income for the factories."
There are 17 sugar factories that have co generation plants and they generate around 232 MW of which 110MW is sold to the MSEDCL at Rs 3.05 per unit.
These co-generation plants could help in reducing the shortfall of electricity but it has its own limitations, an MSEDCL official in Pune said. Bagasse is available only in the season that lasts around six to seven months. The cogeneration plant generates electricity only when the bagasse is available.
A factory crushing 2,500 tonne of cane in one season requires five MW electricity per hour, which could be generate through co-generation.
