The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has recently launched its famous Mother Dairy brand in the Rs.600 crore annual Ahmedabad milk market. The sources from the industry are describing it as a possible head on clash, as Mother Dairy will face a strong competition from the Amul brand, being produced and distributed by the Gujarat Co-Operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF). The sources added that both the companies of GCMMF and NDDB have been fighting with each other over the Mother Dairy for a long time and the farmers contend that it is merely a concept that the NDDB is claiming the ownership of the brand.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Mother Dairy India Ltd, Paul Thachil, the NDDB has already got license for Mother dairy in New Delhi and the GCMMFs Mother Dairy brand is registered in Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat. He also informed that Mother Dairy will replace the company named Sugam Brand, sold as milk pouches in Saurashtra and Ahmedabad, soon.
An expert from the industry has commented that the GCMMF or Amul has already crossed a landmark, with its member union procuring 100.2 Lakh kg per day (LKPD) of milk on 27th December. The expert said that this is the first time that the 13 district unions affiliated to the federation, have procured more than 100 lakh Kg on a single day. The sources further stated that the federation is currently having net sales of Rs. 4232.81 crore and it has also established as an apex marketing body.
