The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is building a new bridge over the Damodar river situated in the state of West Bengal very soon with an investment of Rs. 50 crore. The sources from the company have informed that the Union Minister for Steel, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan has laid the foundation stone of the new road bridge on Tuesday and the bridge is going to connect the places of Burnpur in Burdwan district and Madhukonda in Purulia district of West Bengal. The SAIL officials have informed that the company will be funding the project under its corporate social responsibility programme.
According to one of the top officials from the company, the bridge is likely to be about 720-metre long and this all-weather road bridge will also provide a better connectivity for the entire area under the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority. The IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) of SAIL is located in that area and the company has merged the ISP with SAIL two years ago. The official also said that the plant is also undergoing massive modernization and expansion as part of a larger growth plan at the moment.
The Union Minister for Steel, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan was speaking at a public gathering on the occasion and he said that the ISP Steel Plant is going to honour its 2010 modernization and expansion deadline. He added that the Kulti Steel Works, that is revived recently is also likely to commence its production by the month of August, this year. He described the ISP and Kulti Steel Works as a part of the "national heritage" and said that the revival of both ISP and the Kulti Steel Works is going to assist in the development for the state of West Bengal. The SAIL is planning to invest a huge amount of more than Rs 20,000 crore for the modernization and expansion of its units in West Bengal at the moment.
