The giant construction company in India, Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) has recently announced that it has received a huge contract from the Hebi Coal and Electricity Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Zhongyuan Coal Chemical Industry Group, Peoples Republic of China. The company officials of the company have informed that the contract has been awarded to its Heavy Engineering Division and it is having a total valuation of €28 million (Rs 170 crore). The officials added that they would have to supply the Coal Gasifier and Syngas Cooler assembly to Hebi, under this contract.
According to one of the top officials of L&T, the proposed gasifier assembly and the structure would be having a total weight of 1,740 tonnes, once completed and this is going to be the largest and heaviest gasifier assembly of the world. The official said that the assembly will be having a total capacity to handling 3,400 tonnes of coal per day and it will be the heart of a methanol plant with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes per year. The official also said that the company has won the contract through an international competitive bidding process.
The L&T has already released an official statement regarding getting the contract and said that it is planning to manufacture the equipments of the assembly from advanced technology steels at its manufacturing facilities at Powai and Hazira. According to the statement, the Hazira facility is situated on the waterfront and is having easy access to the sea for shipment. A Member of the Board and also the Senior Executive Vice-President of L&T, Mr. M.V. Kotwal has stated that the manufacture of this gasifier would require transportation of the large fabricated sections, with on-site assembly, testing and erection. He added that though these types of jobs usually pose enormous challenges, the teams at L&T are quite confident that they would be able to meet the requirements. He also said that the teams are confident because they arte having a wonderful track record of having successfully completed similar work on gasifiers that were supplied to remote locations in China. He further said that as the costs of oil and natural gas has rose recently, the coal gasification is providing a promising future for offering a cost effective alternative feedstock for the downstream power, fertilizer, petrochemical complexes and coal to liquid fuel plants.
