The sources from the Indian electronics industry have informed that the sales of the standalone printers have declined by about 10 per cent during the first half of the financial year 2008. The sources said that this decline happened in spite of the domestic PC market grown by a double-digit and the main reasons behind this decline is the consumers preference for all-in-one devices and also the rise in network adoption.
According to the Chief Strategy Officer of a printer manufacturing company, WeP Peripherals, Mr. Jayant Gundewar, "With information overload due to Internet and connectivity, prints have actually gone up. There is no change in our framework, which demands multiple copies of documents such as invoices and challans. An average Indian user prints about 3-4 times more than worldwide average". The experts from the industry are contending that the industry is going to see a major shift very soon in terms of printers being attached to networks. They said that a number of consumers using laser printers are currently moving to the multi-functional devices (MFDs), that can perform various functions like scanning, copying, fax and printing.
One of the sources from the industry has stated that the sales of inkjet MFDs from Canon has went up by about 118 per cent, Laser MFDs sales grew by 41 per cent and the sales of Copier Laser MFDs also increased by 32 per cent in the year of 2007. The Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT), has recently informed that the printer sales in the first half of the financial year 2008 was standing at 6.8 lakh units and the poor offtake in business segment was the main reason behind this. However, the MAIT does not report the MFDs under the printer category and these numbers are only reflecting the standalone printers.
The Executive Director of MAIT, Mr. Vinnie Mehta said in this regard, "Consumption of MFDs has taken-off in a big way as large corporates and SMBs are buying these products as a cost-effective solution. For households, the sale of dot matrix printers and inkjets has actually grown". However, when contacted, the officials of the Hewlett-Packard disagree to say anything on the issue and the General Manager- Business Development of TVS Electronics, Mr. N.V. Mahadevan said that the consumption of materials used in DMPs is increasing as was evident from the demand for ribbons and ink refills.
