A new international telecom infrastructure company is planning to enter the Indian market very soon and the company is the US-based Unicorn Communications. The officials from the company have stated that it is intending to start its operations within about three months and it would offer the telecom infrastructure like mobile towers in India. The industry sources have informed that after entering the Indian market, the Unicorn is going to face tough competition from the existing players in this sector like GTL, Quipo and American Towers Corporation.
Announcing their plans to enter the Indian market, the CEO of Unicorn Communications, Mr. David Rottmayer said, "The bulk of the investment will go into developing a centralized research and development centre for engineering, planning and training in India". He said that the company is planning to start a vocational training and development centre for addressing the shortage of telecommunication skills in India and other growing economies, in the long run as well. He further said, "When we find a strategic local partner, we will enter into a joint venture relationship that makes sense for each party. Unicorn on its part will bring multi-skilled engineers, technicians and program management expertise - all of which is short supply in India".
A joint study recently conducted by a consultancy company, Zenesys, and the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, has estimated the present market size of telecom infrastructure sector in India to be at $15.5 billion. The experts from the industry have commented that a number of 3,50,000 to 5,00,000 towers are likely to be needed in India within the next three years. The Executive Director and Head, Telecom of KPMG, Mr. Romal Shetty said, "Since the demand is huge, competition is bound to increase. In order to improve the telecom quality, there is a need to set up more towers".
