Government Lifted Export Ban on Castor, Coconut Oils
The Indian government has recently lifted the ban on castor oil, coconut oil and the oils that are made from minor forest produce, in order to response to the pressure from the industry and State Governments. The officials form the government have informed that the move has came two weeks after it imposed a ban on the shipments of all edible oils from the country for keeping the rising edible oil prices and inflation under control.

The government has issued a notification on Tuesday and said that the restrictions on export of edible oils are not applicable for the non-edible grade castor oil, coconut oil that are being shipped from Cochin port. It said that the bar is also not applicable for the deemed export of edible oils as input raw material from the domestic tariff area to the 100 per cent export-oriented units for production on non-edible goods and oils, made from minor forest produce. The notification said that the minor forest produce whose oils are let off from the export ban include the kokum, neem, dhup, niger seed, mango kernel, sal fat and shellac wax.

However, the notification did not say anything about exports of sesame and groundnut oils from India. The industry sources have informed that the Solvent Extraction Association, recently urged the Central government for lifting the ban on export of all edible oils and said that the shipments from the country were negligible. According to a number of data, the exports of groundnut oil in particular did show a rising tendency in this year as about 30,000 tonnes were contracted for shipments. However, the data also showed that if the other edible oils were to be put together, at the most 3,000 tonnes have been imported.
