The largest carmaker company in Europe and also one of the giant automobile companies in the world, the Volkswagen AG, has informed that it is planning to make further investment in its plant at Chakan, near Pune, very soon. The company officials have stated that the 41 per cent increment in the investment would be made for producing the Skoda Fabia for the Indian market. The company is going to spend a total amount of about Rs 3,500 crore or for building the factory.
Informing all these, one of the spokespersons of the company, Ms Christina Merzbach said that the added investment will pay for an assembly line for the Skoda brands Fabia model that is starting next year. She said that the plant is going to have a production capacity of 110,000 cars per year and it was originally planned to produce only the Volkswagen-brand models. She added that the Fabia is being assembled at the Skoda Auto facility in Aurangabad, at the moment.
The President of Volkswagen India, Mr. Joerg Mueller was also talking about the investment on Thursday and said that the company is planning a bigger presence for its small cars in the Indian market, within the next two years. He said, "We will manufacture the Polo at Chakan from 2010. The concept car Up!, unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo in January, is in the process of development and will be the smallest car offered by the company". He added, "We are developing Up! with a completely different technology. It is just a concept car and we wont launch it before 2012". He also said that the plant that is being set up at Chakan will be having a flexible assembly line for making a range of cars. He further informed that Volkswagen is also thinking of importing its premier car models, like Phaeton and Touareg from the month of May.
