One of the largest pharmaceuticals companies operating in India, the Ranbaxy Laboratories and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi, have recently entered into a collaborative research agreement, in the area of New Drug Discovery Research (NDDR). The sources related to the development have stated that they are going to conduct the research under the aegis of DBTs major initiative in the area of tuberculosis.
According to one of the top officials of Ranbaxy, the company is going to develop novel drugs, by using the inhibitor design for novel targets / pathways /proteins etc., under the new alliance. The official added that DBT is going to provide support to the project with a financial grant, that would be given for a period of 3 years in the first phase of the collaboration. The official also said that the DBT and Ranbaxy will also work together for supporting its clinical development, on identification of a lead molecule. The two authorities are going to constitute a joint Steering Committee for directing, managing and coordinating the collaboration, in a better way.
The CEO and MD of Ranbaxy Laboratories, Mr. Malvinder Mohan Singh was talking about the new collaboration and said, "We are pleased to have this alliance with DBT in the area of NDDR and will work towards building a winning model to develop innovative medicines in the area of tuberculosis". Commenting on the issue and also expressing his views, the Senior Vice President of the Drug Discovery Research, Ranbaxy, Dr. Pradip Bhatnagar said, "We view this strategic partnership as a viable means for faster discovery and development of better medicines. We are pleased to participate in this initiative, which demonstrates the capability and value that Ranbaxy brings to addressing some of our most important health problems".
