The state-run company, National Aluminium Company (Nalco) has recently informed that it is judging the possibility of building a greenfield aluminium smelter and captive power plant near Jharsuguda, western Orissa, very soon. The officials of the company have stated that Nalco is thinking of investing an amount of more than Rs 14,000 crore for the project and the capacity of the proposed smelter is pegged at 5 lakh tonnes per annum. There will also be a captive generation facility of 1,250 mw in the plant and Nalco is likely to source the alumina required for the project from its existing refinery at Damanjodi.
One of the top officials of the company has stated in this context that it has appointed the Engineers India (EIL), as the consultant for the project and the EIL has found the project to be technically executable. The official said that the company is choosing Jharsuguda as the possible site for the plant, because it is in the vicinity of the IB valley coal reserves. The official added that the company is already having the required technology, and it is expecting the land acquisition to be completed without much difficulty.
Confirming the news about the companys plans, the Director (Finance) of Nalco, Mr. B L Bagra said, "Yes, we have plans to set up a smelter and captive power plant in Jharsuguda to add about 9 lakh tonne alumina capacity which is exported annually now. The projects fate does not hinge on the availability of water". He informed that the state-owned Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Orissa (Ipicol) has already forwarded the Nalcos application for water from the IB river to the water resources department. According to the official sources, providing water to the proposed plant from the river is depending on the priority of the state government. Mr. Bagra added that the company is also considering various options for setting up smelter plants in the countries like South Africa and Iran, provided it gets a cheap power in those countries.
