The major mobile chipset manufacturing company, Qualcomm, has recently stated that it is having some plans to manufacture and provide higher-end smart phones at affordable prices for the masses in the near future. The officials of the company have informed that the company has already started discussing with its original equipment manufacturing partners for the purpose and is likely to make an official announcement, very soon.
According to the President of Qualcomm India & South Asia, Mr. Kanwalinder Singh, "We are aiming towards introducing sub-$250 or Smart Phones, below Rs 10,00 in India soon". He added, "We are have already initiated this process, and the OEMs are at present in the designing stage, we should be able to roll out these phones by 2009". Mr. Singh said that the smartphones are likely to be available with full in-built HSDPA and also with an advance version of 3G mobile functions.
The sources from the industry have informed that the companies like ZTE, Huawei, LG, Samsung and HTC, are among the OEM partners of Qualcomm. However, Mr. Singh did not agree to say anything about with which of this existing partners, the company was collaborating for this venture. The industry sources added that a smartphone is actually a mobile phone that offers some advanced capabilities beyond a typical mobile phone, and it often has the PC-like functionality. The sources further said that the smartphones are also the full-featured mobile phones with personal computer like functionality, along with camera and email capabilities with a complete personal organizer.
