Royal Crown Derby, a major producer of ceramics in Britain, is interested in India to bridge over the economic downturn.
After the collision of Waterford Wedgewood, an iconic name in British pottery for nearly 250 years, the Derby-based company announced plans for expansion.
As the chairman and chief executive of Royal Crown Derby Hugh, Gibson said, 2009 will be a big challenge for the company.
As he commented, "The coming year is very uncertain. Our biggest markets, the UK and the US, are fragile and retailers are keeping their stocks down to a minimum. We will be working hard to develop other export markets, including the Middle East, Russia and India, where economies are still growing and there is wealth available for luxury products like ours."
Waterford Wedgwood, which makes Wedgwood pottery, Royal Doulton and Waterford crystal, said it was calling in administrators to its UK arm.
The Waterford, Ireland based firm, has a factory in Stoke, which employs 1,100 of the firms worldwide workforce of 8,000.
