According to a recent report, Virgin olive oil will now attract zero percent duty. The Indian Olive Association president, VN Dalmia, said, "The clarification clears a historical anomaly and indicates towards lifting of veil of ignorance about olive oil."
Earlier, reports stated that nationwide olive oil companies had received notices from the department of revenue intelligence to pay arrears of duty from April 1, 2008 at 45%. DRI hold the argument was that extra virgin olive oil does not fall under the edible category. There is 7.5% duty is on refined oils and 0% on crude oils.
