NTPC Ltd plans to raise coal imports in the year starting April by generating capacity to meet demand in Asias third-biggest economy.
R.S. Sharma, Chairman of NTPC said that the utility may purchase 12.5 mn metric tons of coal in the next fiscal year. The company has so far imported 4.5 mn tons of coal in the year ending March 31, compared with the 8.4 mn tons planned, report added.
The power producer will invest Rs170bn (US$3.4 bn) to add 3,000 megawatts of electricity generating capacity in the next fiscal year.
The report stated that the peak shortage of power in India may to widen to 18.1% in the year to March as demand outstrips supply in the worlds second most populous nation. Indias installed capacity as of Jan. 1 was 147,457.81 megawatts.
