NTPC, countrys largest power producer, has announced that it would scale up its import of coal to 8.33 per cent of the requirement in 2009-10 to produce 3,000 MW more in the next financial year.
Speaking to the media, NTPC Chairman and Managing Director R S Sharma said, "We would import 12.5 million tonnes of coal in the next financial year (out of the total requirement of 150 million tonnes). We will add 3,000 MW power capacity during the same period."
NTPC has imported nearly five million tonnes of coal out of the target of 8.2 million tonnes during the current financial year (2008-09), the total requirement being 125 million tonnes.
NTPC will commission two units of its Dadri thermal power station in UP, one unit each in Sipat (Chhattisgarh), Korba (Chhattisgarh) and Aravalli (Jhajjar, Haryana).
Sharma said that the additional capacity generation (3,000 MW) will take place at two units of the Dadri thermal power station, and one unit each of the Sipat, Korba and Aravalli power plants.
