Hyderabad Metropolitan water board starts sale of canned water
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has commenced commercial trade of canned water.

In the beginning, the board will confine the sale to government offices and institutions. On Tuesday, the boards managing director G Ashok Kumar inaugurated Metro Water at the Asifnagar filter bed. Each can contains 20 litres of water and is priced at Rs 40, and can be used for a month-and-a-half. Branded water like Bisleri is sold at Rs 70 for a can of 20 litres.

Kumar added, "We are tapping only 10,000 litres of drinking water per day for Metro Water. The canned water project will not in any way affect the regular daily supply through pipes. This is only an additional way to raise the boards revenues."

The water for Metro Water is purified at a newly constructed plant at Asifnagar. The water is purified in six stages including sand filtering, activated carbon filtering, micro filtering, reverse osmosis, ultra violet sterilisation and ozonisation. The water quality will be monitored on an hourly basis by the quality control laboratory of the HMWS&SB, which got ISO certification recently.

The project was postponed due to various reasons. However, the board had planned to enter into commercial market with sachets and one litre bottles, in association with Vijaya Dairy.
