India is poised to be a leader in the global silk market with its newly developed technology, through which natural colour silk yarn could be produced, the first of its kind in the world. World leader China and other silk producing countries like India and Japan have been conducting research to use silk in different fields.
China and Japan have developed silk cosmetics including facials. Now, India has succeeded in a technology to produce colour silk without any dyes. While Chinese dumping silk is posing major threat to the Indian silk industry, Central to the Indian silk industry ,Central Silk Board (CSB) of India hopes that the new technology would provide India an opportunity to tap new global silk market.Currently, synthetic dyes are used to colour silk yarn and fibre across the world. Many of these colours are not user-friendly and create skin allergy and other ailments.
To overcome these problems, the scientiests attached to Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute(CSRTI) have developed a new technology through which natural colour cocoon eggs can be produced.Colour silkworm developed from these eggs spins cocoons, from which colour silk yarn, fibre, thread and fabric could be produced.CSRTI scientiests team led by Dr Sankar Dandin and Dr Kanika Trivedy has achieved this breakthrough.
